Sony?? 3D Blu-ray Disc??? Player BDP-BX57

Small in its design, the BDP-S360 is only 16.9 inches wide by 2.2 inches high and 8.1 inches in depth. It is a combination of a sleek glossy finish with touches of conservative elements. It will not be a standout feature in your Home Entertainment theater, but should blend in nicely. The dark, glass like front panel flips open, revealing the disc loading tray. The player itself does not have many controls, you will have to use the Remote Control to navigate the player’s operations. The remote is easy to use but does not have a Open/Close button which might not appeal to some consumers. A universal remote can be used to remedy this as the BDP-S360 will support receiving an Open/Close IR command.

Most of the inputs and outputs are located on the back of the player, including a USB Port. It is important to note that this USB Port is recessed into the player, encompassed by plastic. This small opening will not support larger USB devices.

Video Quality: The BDP-S360 has a HDMI Output, a Component Video Outputs, and Composite Video Outputs. HDMI will provide great images with resolution options of  480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p/60, and 1080p/24. You can choose between three different types of picture modes – Standard, Brighter Room and Theater Room and choose types of noise reduction. For your DVD playback, it offers up scaling to near High Definition levels.

Audio Quality: Audio connections are the HDMI Output, Digital Outputs (Optical and Coaxial) and 2.0-ch Analog Outputs. Unfortunately, the BDP-S360 does not have 7.1-ch Analog Audio Outputs, so you can not connect to a non HDMI Audio/Video Receiver. However, the BDP-S360 does have internal audio decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio and can transfer these High Resolution audio formats in their native bitstream form through a HDMI cable, for a Audio/Video Reviver to decode. Audio can be adjusted by using the A/V Sync, the Dynamic Range Compression options and an audio filter for analog signals.

On the back of the Blu-ray Player is an Ethernet Port to connect to the internet. This will allow access to any BD-Live content found on certain Blu-ray Discs and for firmware updates. Downloading any BD-Live content will require an external storage device, such as a USB Flash Drive, since the BDP-S360 has no internal storage memory. The USB Port does not support playback of any digital music or photos. But the BDP-S360′s disc drive does support the following – BD, DVD, CD audio, AVCHD, MP3, and JPEG playback.

While the lack of any streaming Video On Demand services puts the BDP-S360 at a disadvantage with other entry level Blu-ray Players. It more than makes up for it by proving great image and audio quality on Blu-ray and DVD playback. If you are not interested in any VOD features, the BDP-S360 may be a good fit for you.

THE PROS: Sony’s BDP-S360 Blu-ray Player is a Profile 2.0 player. It has internal audio decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio Essential. It produces great image quality on Blu-ray disc.

THE CONS: New Blu-ray models provide online streaming services such as Netflix or Vudu. Has an Ethernet Port but no Wi-Fi. Strangely no eject button on the remote, which can be annoying. Load times are slow compared to it contemporary models.

THE FINAL WORD: Sony’s BDP-S360 provides great video and audio quality on playback of Blu-ray discs. But it does not have online streaming media and slower load times. –Price you should look for when purchasing — Under $150.00

The BDP-S560 has an attractive design with a black gloss exterior and touches of dark gray on the top and bottom of the player. The Open/Close button is located on the left at the top corner and will open up the dark blue front panel revealing the disc tray. The power button is found on the opposite side near the top corner. Other playback controls are just limited to the Play and Stop buttons. Therefore, the remote control will be needed for most playback functions. A USB port is located near the bottom right corner of the player. All other connections are on the back of the Blu-ray Player.

Video Quality: The BDP-S560 has a number of video connections. They include the HDMI Output, Component Video Outputs, S-Video Output and Composite Video Outputs. It supports 1080p/60 and 1080p/24 output resolutions through the HDMI connection. This will provide you with the best possible picture when playing back blu-ray and DVD discs. DVDs are also up scaled to near high definition levels via the HDMI connection.

In addition to three types of noise reduction, you have the option of choosing between three preset picture modes. They are Standard, Brighter Room and Theater Room. The BDP-S560 also has x.v.Color and 24p True Cinema features. The x.v. Color output allows for AVCHD format discs while also providing twice the amount of colors as standard RGB color sources, producing more spectacular images. The 24 True Cinema features allows you to view a movie as it was original intended to be seen; at 24 frames per second.

Audio Quality: The BDP-S560 audio outputs include the HDMI Output, Optical and Coaxial Digital Outputs and 2.0ch Analog Outputs. It has internal audio decoding and bitstream output for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Which means the Blu-ray Player can decode these high resolution audio formats or you can pass these formats via HDMI to your Audio/Video receiver to decode. Unfortunately, the BDP-S560 does not have multichannel analog audio outputs, so a HDMI connection is needed to pass decoded high resolution audio formats.

One great advantages of the BDP-S560 that sets it apart form othre entry level players, is its built-in Wi-Fi. It supports the 802.11n/g/b/a frequencies and eliminates the need to use a cable to connect to the internet. Of course an Ethernet Port is available if you are unable to use the wireless feature. Once connected to the internet you can access any BD-Live content you might find on selected Blu-ray Discs. The BDP-S560 does not have any internal memory storage, therefore a USB storage drive is required if you are downloading any BD-Live content. A USB Port can be found on the back and front of the player.

The USB Port on the front will supports photo playback, but not music or movie playback. This is true for any DLNA compatible devices, such as a computer. Photos can be streamed from your computer to the Blu-ray Player; but no Music or Movie files can be streamed.

THE PROS: Sony’s BDP-S560 has great video quality and supports 1080p/24 playback on blu-ray discs. It has internal audio decoding of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. These HD formats can be transmitted in bitstream form via HDMI. It is a Profile 2.0 so it supports BD-Live content and Bonus View. Access to these features are made easier with built-in Wi-Fi wireless network capabilities (802.11a/b/g/n). And it can stream photos from any DLNA compatible devices. Also has a Quick Start Mode that allows most Blu-ray discs to start within seconds.

THE CONS: Unfortunately, the BDP-S560 does not have multi-channel analog audio outputs. If you have an older A/V receiver, you may want to look else where. No internal memory so a USB device is needed to download BD-Live content. The DLNA function does not support streaming of Music or Videos.

THE FINAL WORD: Sony’s BDP-S560 has all the great features of a good Blu-ray Player. It has 1080p/24 output, giving you great image quality. It has internal High Resolution audio decoding and built-in Wi-Fi. It does not have streaming media features that some other Blu-ray Players offer. If you can overlook this lack of streaming Media Services than the BDP-S560, with its Wi-Fi support and DLNA Photo streaming, would make a sound choice. – Price you should look for when purchasing — Under $250.00

The BDP-S370 is coated with a glossy black finish and has a slim/sleek design. The control buttons are located on the front bottom where there is an indentation. The buttons are a mixture of touch sensitive controls and push buttons. Also, located on the front of the player, providing you easy access, is an USB port. Video Quality: Displays great picture quality when playing Blu-ray Disc, the BDP-S370 can be connected the following ways: HDMI, Component or Composite Video outputs. HDMI connection will give you Full 1080p Output. Further enhancing the video display are features such as 24p True Cinema™ Technology, Deep Color and Precision Cinema HD Upscaling. Like almost all Blu-ray Players, the BDP-S370 will upscale standard resolution to 1080p image quality when playing a standard DVD.

Audio Quality: The BDP-S370 has internal audio decoding for Dolby TrueHD, Dolby TrueHD (bitstream), Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD (bitstream). It has a 192kHz/24bit Analog-to-Digital Converter and supports Digital Video Standards such as AVCH, MP3 and PCM. Audio connections for the BD-S370 are as follows: HDMI, Analog Audio Output : 2.0ch (L/R) and one Optical Audio Output. Unfortunately, there are no 7.1 audio outputs. Therefore a receiver with a HDMI input is require to decode the newest audio codes that are on the Blu-ray movie. All of these features and functions help provide you with very good audio quality.

This entry level Blu-ray Player has many other great features. One of which is BRAVIA® Internet Video. Here you can access a wide range of movies, TV shows, videos and music from the internet and stream them directly onto your TV. Netflix, YouTube, Pandora, Slacker and much more are all included with the BRAVIA® Internet Video feature. The BD-S370 will upscale the streaming media to near High Definition 1080p quality.

To use BRAVIA® Internet Video, you have to establish an internet connection to the Blu-ray Player. An Ethernet Port is located on the back of the Blu-ray Player, or you can connect to a wireless broadband network via a USB Wi-Fi adapter. This is not included with the Blu-ray Player and has to be purchased separately. Once connected to your Home Network, there is a feature called Share Personal Entertainment you can access. Where you can stream video files, music or photos between compatible devices. A compatible DLNA device such as your computer.

An interesting feature included with the BDP-S370 is the Gracenote Metadata Service. This will conveniently display information about the movies you are viewing. Another interesting feature that may appeal to some is the iPhone®/iPod touch® compatibility. This turns your iPhone® or iPod touch® into a remote control. This free app lets you control the Blu-ray DVD Player, while also giving you details on actors, directors and more.

THE PROS: The Sony BDP-S370 has a good set of features including Wi-Fi Ready, Streaming services like Neflix and Amazon On Demand, SACD playback and DLNA. Great picture quality and internal audio decoding for Dolby TrueHD, Dolby TrueHD (bitstream), Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD (bitstream).

THE CONS: Does not have any analog 7.1 audio outputs. DLNA feature will not be available until July 2010. No Built-in Wi-Fi, so a USB wireless adapter will be need if you want to connect to the internet wirelessly. No 3D technology. Sony’s BD-S470, BD-S570 and BD-S770 will all eventually have 3D capability.

THE FINAL WORD: Overall,Sony’s BDP-S370 is a good Blu-ray Player in this price range. Has great image and audio quality on Blu-ray Disc. While lacking in some of the features found in higher end Sony Players, the BDP-S370 is a very good entry level Blu-ray DVD Player. – Price you should look for when purchasing — Under $180.00
