I've been debating whether to go with HD DVD or blu ray. After much thought I chose blu ray. To put it short Blu ray has better quality and more movie studios than HD DVD. Blu ray is outselling HD DVD 2 to 1. When you decide to go blu ray this Sony player is a must have. It is superior to all other blu ray players and is the most reasonably priced. You will not be dissapointed if you buy the Sony BDP-S300.

Do not buy this player if you have a SACD collection or are intending to buy Super CDS. Sony BDP-S300 Does Not Support Super CDs. People buying the latest and the greatest equipment normally already have high end components therefore I see a lot of returns of this product. Why did Sony abandon it Own technology--Super CDs? I will continue to use my Sony DVD with uplinking capabilities that plays my SACD collection and will buy a future generation of Blue-Ray that supports SACD. Not Now!

I bought this BD player about 4 months ago. It is a great up-converting player but as far as BD goes, I am not sure any are good. This player is slow to start, about 60-90 seconds and some movies require a couple of minute upload time.

Here is something not a lot of people might know.....I noticed bars on the top and bottom of the movie like old DVD movies on a a standard TV. If you are like me and do not like that well we are S.O.L. If you look at the back of the movie case you will notice a box that has some information in it. In the video are you will see some numbers (for example-Pirates of the Carribean 3 the numbers are 2.35:1), what this means is that the movie was filmed in this aspect ratio (most TV are now 16:9 ratio..see the difference). This means that you will have bars on the top and bottom of your tv while the movie is playing. Basically, if you find a movie that has a ratio of 1.84:1 and higher you will have the bars, anything lower you will not. This is what I found out after several hours on the phone with Sony. I was told to "zoom" in my picture but as with most Tv's you can not do this when hooked up via the HDMI. The only BD movie I found with the ratio low is Disney's Meet the Robinson's. In my experience the picture is a 100 times more clear that the others. If you want the same quality and the entire screen filled than buy the standard version and play on this player, also saves you about $10-$15 in the process.

I bought this player at Best Buy today and I am returning it. It doesn't upconvert as good as the Toshiba HD-XA2. I don't own any HD DVD's yet but I just ordered one from Amazon today.
