BLU-RAY vs DVD

What is Blu-ray™ ?

Blu-ray™, also known as Blu-ray™ Disc (BD) is the name of a next-generation optical disc format. The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. The name Blu-ray™ is derived from the underlying technology, which utilizes a blue-violet laser to read and write data. The name is a combination of “Blue” (blue-violet laser) and “Ray” (optical ray). According to the Blu-ray Disc™ Association the spelling of “Blu-ray” is not a mistake, the character “e” was intentionally left out so the term could be registered as a trademark. The correct abbreviation is BD A single-layer disc can hold 25GB. A dual-layer disc can hold 50GB! *Over 3 hours of high-definition (HD) video on a 50GB disc. *About 9 hours of standard-definition (SD) video on a 50GB disc. To ensure that the Blu-ray™ Disc format is easily extendable (future-proof) it also includes support for multi-layer discs, which should allow the storage capacity to be increased to 100GB-200GB (25GB per layer) in the future simply by adding more layers to the discs.

I have a Pioneer BDP-320 blu-ray disc player connected to a Pioneer Kuro PDP-5020FD HDTV. Set-up was very fast with most of the parameters is automatic between the two Pioneer. The only manual I had to do with the BDP-320 has been set at the exit of Source Direct.

The Pioneer BDP-320 for de-interlacing was lower than the Kuro. Hot Fuzz, which I used as a test DVD and 320 products over the edges white Metropolitan Police logo on the jacket is black. Change Source Direct dispelled any artifacts and makes the best DVD picture on my Kuro yet. Some other materials on DVD (LOTR), I found the best image ever since the BDP-320 is upconverting and PDP-5020FD-east of the intersection. However, the BDP-320 offers the flexibility to get the best possible image of your installation.

The new DMP BD85 Blu-Ray Disc Player was built to replace the BD80 Blu-Ray. Similar to the BD80, the BD85 sports a full 1080p display with an up-conversion of 480/720p resolutions. However, the BD85 has higher resolution precision that makes the picture more vibrant and smooth.

The main difference between the two Panasonic Blu-Rays is the new built in wireless networking capabilities in the BD85. These capabilities are adaptable to DNLA, meaning, internet content, such as JPEG, AVCHD, WMV, can more easily be viewed due to a faster connection that in turn makes the VIERA Cast much more functional.

Scheduled to be released in summer 2006, Blu-ray high-definition DVD players from Pioneer, Panasonic and Samsung set forth to conquer the world of video. Though initial models that were estimated at selling between $1000 and $1800 were deemed pricey, that did not last long as competition from HD-DVD and more manufacturers geared up.

HDTV sets with the newer, potentially sharper, 1080p resolution were on their heels, coming out over the same time frame. And sales of the players were predicted to help drive those of the sets and vice-versa.
